Honored as Dance Role Model of 2023: Celebrating the First Black Rockette
I am thrilled and humbled to announce that I have been honored as the Dance Role Model of 2023! This prestigious recognition holds a special place in my heart because it highlights my journey as the first Black Rockette. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Industry Dance Awards and Dancers Against Cancer for this incredible honor.
Becoming a Rockette was a dream come true. I was captivated by the grace, precision, and sheer magic of their performances. However, growing up, I faced obstacles due to outdated notions that limited opportunities based on skin color. Nevertheless, I persevered, driven by my passion and the belief that talent knows no boundaries.
In 1987, I shattered the glass ceiling as the first African American Rockette. It was a pivotal moment that not only marked a personal achievement but also represented a significant step towards inclusivity and diversity in the dance industry. By embracing change, the Rockettes demonstrated that representation matters and that beauty and talent come in all shades.
Being recognized as the Dance Role Model of 2023 reaffirms the importance of celebrating unity and the power of talented individuals who break barriers. It sends a powerful message that dreams can be realized regardless of the obstacles faced. This award is a symbol of progress and serves as an inspiration to dancers from all backgrounds, encouraging them to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their passions relentlessly.
